FUTURE NOTES / ORIGINAL PERSPECTIVES

The next operating model
is a design choice.

These are editorial perspectives, not a live news feed or forecasts of guaranteed performance. Use them to frame a better question about the future of work.

01 / THE UNIT OF CHANGE

From a task to a dependable service.

An impressive demonstration often begins with a single task: classify this request, summarise this document or draft this answer. An operating service begins with a wider question: what must happen before and after the task for someone to receive a useful result?

That shift changes the design. The team must consider permissions, exceptions, source quality, handovers and recovery. A model may improve while the overall process remains slow because information is missing or authority is unclear. The opportunity is to redesign the route, then judge whether assistance improves it.

02 / HUMAN CAPACITY

Judgement needs an operating role.

“Human in the loop” becomes meaningful when a named person can see the evidence, challenge an output and change the next action. The role needs a manageable workload, clear authority and a route for concerns. Adding an approval button to an overloaded queue does not resolve those design questions.

Future operations may involve more preparation by software and more deliberate use of specialist judgement. That is a possibility to test, not a promise of fewer people or effortless productivity. Include the experience of staff and service recipients when evaluating the change.

03 / CONNECTED SYSTEMS

Local knowledge. Explicit boundaries.

Business knowledge has context: who may see it, which version applies and who can correct it. Connecting models to that knowledge should preserve those boundaries. A response should make its support and limitations understandable rather than converting access to documents into unrestricted access to the organisation.

Choose deployment through a concrete data-flow and operating review. Local infrastructure can offer direct control but still needs maintenance and security. Cloud services can offer useful capabilities but require clear terms, configurations and responsibilities. Hybrid designs need a specific boundary, not an assumption that data stays local.

04 / TECHNOLOGY WITH CONSEQUENCES

Speed is only one kind of progress.

A shorter handling time is useful when it supports the purpose of the service. It can be misleading when it hides rework, exclusions or deteriorating quality. A balanced review asks who benefits, who carries the new burden and which failures are becoming harder to notice.

Keep the process contestable. People should know how to reach a person, correct a record and question a result where appropriate. Build learning into ordinary operations: sample outcomes, review exceptions and retire an approach that no longer serves its purpose.

Risk is part of the design.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a useful starting point for examining AI risks across a system’s lifecycle. This site is independent of NIST and does not claim assessment or certification against its framework.

For a practical way to apply these questions, begin with the pilot playbook and make the next decision, evidence and owner explicit.
